Media Types and Fields
Media types categorize audio content. Media fields extend metadata with project-specific information.
Media types and fields apply at the project level. All stations in a project share the same types and fields.
Media Types
Overview
Each media file has exactly one media type. Media types are required during upload and determine how files are used in scheduling.
Media types enable:
- Visual identification: Color-coded badges in the library
- Filtering: Show only files of a specific type
- Scheduling rules: Sequences and rotations select files by media type
Default Media Types
Each project includes default media types for recordings, cartwall items, and uploads. Files created through these workflows receive the matching default type automatically. Default types can be edited but not deleted.
Creating Media Types
- Open the Types tab in the Media Library
- Click Create Media Type
- Enter a name (e.g., "Music", "Jingle")
- Select a color for the badge
- Configure optional settings:
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Exclude from Sound Processing | Skip audio processing for files of this type |
| Exclude from Icecast Metadata | Do not send metadata to Icecast for this type |
| TTL | Auto-expire files after a set number of days |
- Click Create
TTL (Time to Live)
When TTL is enabled for a media type, files of that type receive an automatic expiry date calculated from the upload date. Expired files are flagged in the media library with a visual indicator in the TTL Date column.
Editing Media Types
- Open the Types tab in the Media Library
- Click the type to edit
- Modify settings
- Save changes
Deleting Media Types
Media types can only be deleted if no files are assigned to them.
Typical Media Types
| Type | Description | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Music | Songs and tracks | Main rotation content |
| Jingle | Station IDs and imaging | Between songs, hourly |
| Ads | Commercial spots | Scheduled ad breaks |
| News | News bulletins and updates | Top of hour |
| Voicetrack | Pre-recorded presenter segments | Show preparation |
Media Fields
Overview
Media fields extend the standard metadata with project-specific information. Fields appear in the detail view and upload interface.
Field Types
| Type | Description | Example Values |
|---|---|---|
| String | Free-form text input | "Summer Campaign 2024" |
| Number | Numeric values | 150, 2.5, -10 |
| Boolean | Yes/no toggle | Explicit content flag |
| Select | Dropdown with predefined options | Mood: Upbeat, Calm, Energetic |
Creating Fields
- Open the Fields tab in the Media Library
- Click Create Field
- Enter a field name
- Select the field type
- For Select fields, enter the available options
- Save the field
Editing Fields
- Open the Fields tab
- Click the field to edit
- Modify the name or options
The field type cannot be changed after creation.
For Select fields, adding new options does not affect existing values. Removing an option clears that value from files using it.
Assigning Field Values
Assign values during upload or on the media detail page:
During upload:
- Fill in media field values in the upload sidebar
On the detail page:
- Open the media detail page and edit field values in the main area
Deleting Fields
Deleting a field removes all stored values from media files. This action cannot be undone.
